Finally I Can Touch My Toes Again

I had an incident that happened to me the other day that got me to thinking about my life and the wrong turns I took.  First I’m going to tell you want the incident was and I’ll explain what it got me to thinking about.

I was out in LolyKat (our sari-sari store) and someone ordered a Pepsi.  I went to get the Pepsi from the cooler, but I knocked over the bucket we put the money in over.  All the money fell on the floor.  Right about then someone ordered another Pepsi.  I ask our helper, Vicky, if I should pick up the money and put it back in the bucket so I could knock it over with my big butt again.  Since she doesn’t understand English very well, she had no idea what I was talking about.  I just picked up the money after the 2nd Pepsi was delivered.

Okay here’s the incident.  When I picked up the money I just bent over from the waist and picked it all up.

Not a big deal you say?  Well maybe it’s not a big deal for most people in the world, but for me and millions of others, we know what’s it’s like to not be able to do that because of being overweight.

When I first arrived in the Philippines in  May 2010, I weighed 330 pounds.  I was unable to even see my toes much less touch them.  It was an effort just to hang onto something to bend down to do it.  I couldn’t even wash my own feet properly because I couldn’t hold them up long enough to soap and rinse it.  I had to either do it a little bit at a time throughout the shower or have my wife wash them for me.

At present time I still weigh about 265 pounds, but as I have stated, I can now touch my toes, touch the floor and wash my own feet properly.  I personally believe that I still need to lose at least 45 more pounds.

That got me to thinking about how I’ve lived my life and how I should have lived my life.  It’s not like I didn’t know what was happening to me.  I just didn’t realize that it had gotten so bad.  I’m sure it sneaks up on most people that way.  Still I knew that I was suppose to be exercising and not eating 4 eggs, a pound of bacon, a half a loaf of bread and 2 quarts of orange juice for breakfast, 2 foot long sandwiches, chips and 4 sodas for lunch and a large pizza and 4 more sodas for supper.  Unfortunately that was not the most that I have eaten in one day either.  I have eaten 32 slices of pizza at one setting before.  I didn’t eat the end crust so I justified it (pretty sad).

I made a lot of half ass attempts to lose weight and even did lose weight a few times, only to gain it back with additional pounds added on.  The point is that I should have stuck with it because I knew of the seriousness of heart disease, diabetes and heart attacks.  How can you ignore things like that?  Now I don’t know how or why I did, but I did.  I’m sure that millions of others are doing the same thing, ignoring what overeating is doing to them.

Being here in the Philippines where I live has helped me mostly because there are no fast food restaurants here that I like really.  Of course soon they will be getting some here.  Some pizza places are coming and I need to stay away from the on a constant basis.  I need to further train my mind that it is not necessary to eat a whole large pizza, when a couple of slices would do.

This is me now.

For now I’m going to enjoy the less weight and do what I can do make it even less.  I hope to train my brain before all the fast food restaurants get here.

Now I know the weight can sneak up on you, so I’ll be extra careful and also get in any exercise I can, even if it’s just walking.

  1. Good to see you’ve managed to lose some weight. I know how difficult it can be. I’m one of those who has always battled his weight as well but I’m also vertically challenged, hehe. I find when I spend any extended time in the province I always lose weight because I get away from the processed foods and get a lot more exercise. Here’s hoping you can reach your goal.

    • Yeah losing weight is not really my strong suit either. It’s just easier when you don’t have all the processed food. If I would actually get more exercise I might even get over this weight plateau I’ve been sitting at for months now. I ain’t complaining though 265 lbs is much better than 330 lbs. I’d still like to lose another 40-60 lbs though, at least.

  2. I got up to 325lbs b4 my stroke, lol, wonder ho that heppaned?, also diabetic, got a bit heavier through lack of activity b4 moving to PH, no biking or motorcycles anymore for me but I walk as much as i safely can, plus the heat humidity here has helped my flexiblity too muscles are looser no more back pains, off the pain pills down to 220 lbs now, still eating like a horse but not the foods i did so much in USA, no fast foods, no cold cuts, not much red meats now, little cheese and milk, plus my diet affected by needing soft palate diet so i don’t miss steaks or the deli sandwiches so much. the fresh fruits, vegatables became my desserts, not cookies, cakes, ice creams,I feel much better here less stress than the old life as a Finance Mgr, with my wife’s help i figured PH has added 10 years plus an 85% improvement in my life.

    • I was getting afraid of having a stroke too. I like being alive and there are still plenty of things that I want to do before I go. I guess I’m luckier than you because I can still bike and walk a lot. I only get to eat like a horse on occasion but, as I found out at Marcial’s Grille last week, I can still put it away. I don’t eat that much dessert, especially here, but usually my only problem was ice cream anyway in Texas. I do miss my steak and my sandwiches. Less stress is one of the major reasons the western world people move here, at least that is my impression. My life wasn’t so bad so I’ll take the reverse, 85 years added to my life and a 10% improvement in life.

  3. Good work on losing the weight UJ. A battle I fight myself. Seems like it’s easier to do in the Philippines when you walk more and find it harder to find food you actually enjoy. I know I’d eat a lot less if it wasn’t so darn easy.

    • Hey Terrence, long time no hear. It’s been almost a year. Glad you are still around. Your right about eating because it is so darn easy. Also when you’re bored AND it’s easy, that’s big trouble. If I actually exercised I might even get a decent looking body. I hope to accomplish that soon.
Don’t be such a stranger, comment more, express your opinion, gives me more to talk about.

  4. Hi John,

I really like your outlook on this subject. I am not a big guy like you. I am only 5’7 with a muscular frame. When I was young my family doctor told me that even though you are in great condition now that because of your muscular frame you will have to work hard to keep from getting fat. I thought yeah right you are just jealous old man because I have abs. The old doc was right. I was in great shape most of my adult life because I always worked two full time jobs with lots of manual labor. Then I took an office job and saw what he was talking about. Some of my co-workers would comment that I was gaining weight. I wasn’t eating more. I was just less active. I went from 150 with less than three percent body fat to 175. I had no health problems from that. A few years ago while in the US I broke my foot and could not have the surgery to repair it because then I could not work. I endured about a year and a half of agony and limited activity. My weight got up to 228 at one point. I know what you are thinking; Damned light weight! Remember I am not a giant like you. I just have a big mouth! I am down to 185 now but have had to work hard to get to that point. At my maximum weight I experienced many health problems. Sleep apnea was the worst part. I was exhausted because my sleep was disturbed many times per night when I would stop breathing. I finally bought a dental appliance that kept my airway open. That was the best money I ever spent. I have not had to use it for the last two years because when I lost weight the snoring stopped. It was a pretty vicious cycle because the weight gain from limited activity caused problems that made you not want to be active. I can honestly say that I know why some heavy people are cranky because I sure was at the time. I have pictures of us in Las Vegas that I am ashamed of because I was so fat at the time. I remember my feet killing me the whole time. Keep up the good work fat boy! When you start feeling better it is a great reward.

    • You know what, that is very believable. That is exactly what happens when you get fat. I also had/have sleep apnea. I don’t know if I still have it, but I did nothing except lose some weight to correct it. I tried one of those stupid machines for awhile, but I couldn’t handle that. I don’t seem to have any ill effects from not sleeping well though, so I guess I sleep well enough. I wasn’t thinking ‘light weight’, but I wish I was at 228 lbs right now. Of course I’m 5’11”, not only 5’7″. I know what you mean about being ashamed of the pictures too. The feature picture of this post is the first time I have exposed it to the public. I’m happy to say that that WAS me, but I will do whatever it takes to make sure it is never me again.

      • Hi John,

I saw those machines that you were talking about and there was no way that I could use that. I had a mouthpiece like a football player exept it was top and bottom connected. It worked great and made a big difference. Marie would come home with size XL clothes which would kind of piss me off but I had to be gracious. I imsisted that I would fit back into my normal size medium shirts and she was pleasantly surprised that I can wear them again. It is great to be flexible again. haha! I have been thinking about getting a mountain bike to ride for exercise. I had one before and got pretty good results. I now face the challenge of finding one that is not overpriced or cheaply made. Just to let you know that I am not a health nut. If you ever came for a visit I would make you one mean lasanga. I would love to say I would make you some Tex-Mex but so far I have had lousy results with the available ingredients.

        • Yeah I tried those things, but it gave out too much air and I couldn’t handle it. I know what you are talking about, but I think I’m okay with that now. No complaints about me snoring recently. Again, not trying to be a smart ass, but I’d love to be able to fit into XL clothes again. At the L/XL level I would be set. Maybe not after the lasagna though. Tex-Mex is harder to make then some people think so when the ingredients are not good, you are behind the curve already.
I too would love to have a not cheaply made mountain bike, but I don’t know if I will ever find one here. I’m suppose to be getting our tricycle back this month and after I reconstruct it to my size, I will use that. A private tricycle though, but I’m not counting on it actually getting back to me this month.

  5. Congrats on the weight loss so far. It sure is easier to pack it on than it is to take it off.

    • Thanks. I really need to lose another 40-50 lbs though. That’s for sure, it is too much easier to put it on than take it off.
