Eastern Visayas Coconut Oil Exports Down
PALO, LEYTE — Coconut oil exports from Eastern Visayas dropped last year as farmers preferred to sell whole nuts instead of processing these into copra (dessicated coconut).
A report by the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) said coconut oil exports went down by 63% to 113,258 metric tons (MT) from 305,012 MT in 2010.
Edilberto V. Nierva, PCA regional manager, said the economic challenges faced by importing countries, like the United States, in the first half also contributed to the decline. Tacloban Oil Mills based in Tolosa town shipped 52,700 MT of coconut oil abroad, while New Leyte Edible Oil Manufacturing, Inc. recorded a 42,202-MT shipment. Samar Coco Products Manufacturing Corp. in Calbayog City exported 18,356 MT.
