Surviving in the Land of Smiles

Calbayog City Brown Out Kittens

Well it’s only 0730 and already something has happen this morning that has not happened around me since we’ve been here.  I’m sure it has happen, many time, but I just haven’t experienced it, here, until now.  The calico cat that has been hanging around, the one I’ve been calling “Calvin”, well I guess I should have been calling ‘her’ Calvina or something similar.  She had kittens this morning.  Yeah we already knew she was pregnant, but I just didn’t say anything until now.  Lita says she thinks Blue is the daddy.  She just thinks that because they are always hanging around here all the time.  She could be right though.  One of the kittens has the design of Blue.  “Calvina” was a ‘very’ fraidy cat when she was first around here.  She has gotten better, especially around me.  What can I say, I can charm the ladies from all kinds of species.  Anyway we have kittens, about 1/2 hour old at the time of this note writing.  The number of kittens is unknown at this time, but it looks like 4.

Naga Official Seal

The City of Naga (Bikol: Ciudad nin Naga, Maogmang Naga; Filipino: Lungsod ng Naga) is a highly urbanized independent component city in the Philippines. Naga is 377 kilometres south-east of Manila, the nation’s capital, and about 380 kilometres north-east of Cebu City

Naga is the “Heart of Bicol” being the commercial, financial, religious and cultural center of the Bicol region. It is also the regional capital since 1956, it is also the educational center of Camarines Sur, and the whole Bicol Region. Residents of the City are called Nagueños.

Naga City is at the core of Metro Naga, an official designation given the City and 14 municipalities in the area administered by the Metro Naga Development Council. MNDC covers the entire 2nd district of the province of Camarines Sur, and part of its 1st, 3rd and 4th districts.

Naga City is the academic center of the province of Camarines Sur as well as of the region . The city has two universities: Catholic institution such as Aquinas University of Naga (AUL),sister school of University of Santo Tomas in Manila, and the state-run Bicol University (BU), the biggest tertiary school in Bicol, and is one of the country’s biggest universities that is acknowledged as an accountancy and engineering powerhouse and also renowned for its agricultural and fisheries research. Aquinas University is the first university in Bicol to offer College of Pharmacy.

It’s raining.  It’s been raining.  It rained all night long.  I’m out here in LolyKat listening to the rhythm of the falling rain.  Hey, that sounds like the makings of a song.  What?  Oh, someone beat me to that one huh.  Oh well, maybe next time.  I’m wondering how many people will bother going out, much less going to the store.  It’s a dreary day, but I like it.  I would not want every day to be like this, but I could go for 2 or 3 times per month.

One of the electric fans that we bought from the fan guy gave out on us yesterday.  It’s not the first one we bought, the one I use in the computer room, but the second one we were using at night in the bedroom.  We’ve been using it instead of me carrying the one from the computer room into the bedroom when I done in here.  Well guess what, I have to do that again until we get that fan fixed, which probably won’t be until we return from Tambis.  Maybe even after returning from Texas.

Two of those kittens are fighting, or maybe playing rough.  It looks like they are boxing.  There must be more than 1 teat there, I don’t know what they are fighting about.  Maybe that is the “special” teat.

Well Crap!  Here we go again.  Brown out 0951.

About 10:35 the electric came back on, but instead of me being at the computer, like I was when it went off, I’m stuck back out here in LolyKat.  I sure got the bad end of that deal.  I did get to take a nap after about 2 hours in the store though.  After taking my nap I got up and headed back to the computer.  Just when I had it all up and ready to do some things … yep you guessed it Poof!  Brown out again (2:35pm).

It tried to come back on about 10 minutes later, but that only lasted a couple of seconds.

Naga City – SV Hotel and other Hotels

http://www.nagacityhotels.com/

So now, to be in my shoes, it’s raining, Lita has a headache and she tells me about it every 20 minutes, a customer is playing his music too loud (then talking over the music), Blue came in the store to lay down next to me (and he thinks we are buddies), Calvina looks at me funny when she’s with the kittens (as she is now), there is constant traffic going by that’s making too much noise (muffler people), we have very little business here in the store and there is no good beef here.

All in all, I’d rather be on the computer (while the electric is on).  Oh great now the music turned to Rap Crap.  It’s time to go hide in the house for a few minutes to get a change of scenery.

At 4:05pm I thought, forget this.  I got up from laying on the bed (hiding) and closed the store.  I figured I’d rather be in the house working on these notes, away from everything, even though there are still no lights.

At 4:10pm Lita said her headache was gone (that goodness) and she needed to go downtown.  It looks like we will be having chicken adobo again tonight, darn it.  I told her that I don’t like the small pieces of chicken, I hope she remembers.

I’m going to write some more notes, then think of ideas for e-books and for the new website.

At 4:52pm, we have power again.  I wonder how long it will last this time?

So I got up, turned on the computer and just as soon as I got it up and did a couple of things, guess what?

No, you’re wrong, but we did have a big enough power spike that it made the computer go off.  Maybe I need a new surge protector because that sure didn’t protect me from that surge.  It just knocked me out right quick.

We did have adobo, but some of the pieces of chicken were too small.  There was only 1 breast portion because Lita saved on for me to use tomorrow for lunch and the vegetables.  That was nice of her.

fluvial procession – Naga City

http://wordsmith.org/words/fluvial.html

This coming Thursday morning is when we are suppose to be going to Tambis.  It looks like I’m going.  I’m going to make an attempt to do a video of the trip.  I’ve never tried that before, so it might be a little screwy.  I’ve already asked Lita to remind me about the camera.  She told me today that Titing might be getting a van rented for just us.  I heard P500 per person to travel all the way to Tambis.  That would be worth it in a nice air conditioned van.

I’ve been listening to the Eagles Greatest Hits 1975.  I’m on the second time around right now (Lying Eyes).

It’s 9:33pm at the moment and I’m at the end of this post.  I hope y’all are still reading and it didn’t bore you much.  Now I have to come up with a name for this post.  How did I do with that I wonder?

  1. UJ Roger the name change. You are correct. And since you do have my email address, I’d appreciate it very much if you could please drop me a line.
I’d like to recomend a few things to your readers, if I may.
    1. I would recomend very strongly that you buy yourself as big a UPS ( Un-InterruptiblePowersupply ) as soon as possible to plug your computer into. the bigger it is, the longer a blackout it can see your computer thru. At Very Minimum the P1800 ( approx) unit. I protects your computer because it not only keeps power on till you can go thru the normal shut down, but it also has surge protection. My P1800 UPS even has voltage regulation. That replaces those AVR units you see in so many businesses.
    2. If you computer seems to be shutting down very slow and/or if it has already suffered some of those blackouts, I suggest you power up completly then proper shut down two or three times. This cleans files that got left on your computer that are normally deleted in a normal shutdown. ( the short story).
    3. THere is a “power on Delay box made by Panther and available at some hardware stores and run about P1000. this plugs in between your refrigerator and the wall and keeps power off the refrigerator for 3 to5 minutes after power comes back on. often it doesn even have a chance to come on for some of those very brief power-ons SAMELCO gives us and that’s a Good thing! It prevents the compressor from coming on too soon after a blackout which can kill a compressor if it was in a compress cycle when power went off. Really nice cheap insurance for your refrigerator. and you dont have to run unplug it when the power goes off.
If you air-con doesnt have protection built into it. I’d suggest you get a “POD” for it too.

  2. Hi All,

I happen to read this blog when I was searching for solar panels. There is one selling solar panels in Calbayog now. You may search their website. They are located in the city. Its I hope this could help.

Its Solar System Philippines. Maybe you would want to check it out.

    • I think I will check them out. If anyone out there has been thinking about putting up solar panels, this might be ur chance. It sure would help during the brown outs.

      Here is the link: http://solarsystemsphilippines.com/contact-us/
Cris I hope that you find other things on this site that interest you. I try to represent Calbayog City the best I can. Thanks for stopping by and extra thanks for the comment.

    • UJ: This is a bit off topic from these threads.
You must have a heckuvalot of hi res pix and/or javascript on your pages.
Here in Tarangnan, some 20 or 30 clicks south of you here, It takes
hours if not days to get a single page down. I’d really like to read
your pages but cant. my smart bandwidth just plain SUCKS! And I’ve been
told by the lady in the Smart office here that the enginer here says
I’m the only one complaining so there must not really be anything wrong.
I asked when we might get 3G here in Tarangnan ( about halfway
between CalBayog and Catbalogan and 11 kilcks off the AH-1 highway) as
both she and the Smart Bro helpline has been “suggesting” that it might
be imminent. The last conversation tho indicated that iminent is very
relative. As in sometime before the sun swells up in about 4 billion
years and eates all it’s planets. ( aka “when Donkeys fly) You think I’m exaggerating don’t you?
I told her it probably doesnt make any difference anyhow since it
will probably receive the same support as the current 2G so that
bandwidth wont be any better than what I’m getting now, within 6months
of installation. She didnt seem to like the sound of that and it pretty
much ended the conversation. So, if you guys in Cabalaog are getting
more that 5Kbytes/s. count yourself DANGED lucky!

      • Using IE7 as a browser, Globe wi-max at max speed 2Mb and lucky if I get 80% of that speed on my best day, I complained to UJ while back about the website loading speeds, took the bull by the horns cleaned out my PC with CCleaner, updated Avast antivirus, added Google Chrome as additional browser, now when I want UJ’s site I use Chrome IE still slower than tree sap in winter.

        • reply to Ricks comments about IE7.
I pretty much gave up IE7x long time ago except when someplace I visit demands it to deal with them, and then I try to find a different source.
I use Opera, Firefox and have just recently added chromium. I seem to have the best luck with Opera so far. But also I am running on Ubuntu 11.04 linux for the most part. So far at least, my luck with linux has been far better at cellular broadband and browsing than I ever had with windoze.
But also I can run up a “live CD” of several versions, because with that, I can test my channel with smart with totally fresh configuration free from anything I might have done with my normal installation. You might say it gives me the chance to try a Gold installation free from any kind of “contamination”, so to speak.
If you would like to have a similar Gold Disk, I would suggest you download kubuntu:
          mirror.internode.on.net/pub/kubuntu/12.10/release/kubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso
If you only have a 32bit machine then get the 386 version and download and burn it to a CD. When finished, reboot the computer with the disk in the drive and hopefully, your computer will boot to the CD. If it does not, reboot and when the first screens start to comoe up, particularly the one that offers to send you to setup, press F11 to get to the boot menu and select the CD. when the CD boots up you will have to tell it to boot from the CD then select Try Kubuntu. DO NOT let it install. fortunatly it will give you several chances to back out of install before it’s too late :) .. I suggest the Kubuntu because it looks the most like windows so there’s less of a problem to use.
If you have an ethernet connection from your computer to whatever internet connection, there is probably nothing left to set up.
If you’re using a smart, globe,or sun broadband modem, look at the lower right hand side of the taskbar. You will need to edit connections but the wizard will take you thru most allof it with little trouble.
I hope this is usefull. I’m not trying to convert you to a linux user, just give you a diagnostic tool.

      • Gary, that’s too bad. Is Smart your only choice?
Here is my latest speed test results, how does that compare to you?

        http://speedtest.net/result/2657336577.png

  3. thought of another question or two. or three. but first sorry about the lack of good editing in my previous post. tried to catch everything but missed some. spaces are a real weak spot with me.
OK, first question is regarding internet. what are yall using? I’m using a Smart Bro but I only have 2G here in tarangnan. Talked to support a couple days ago and the lady said my area is slated for upgrade to 3G. she just couldnt tell me if it would be in my lifetime.
my 2G service is probably the bottom end. last week before the call I was averaging about 4KBytes/s. after the call it has gone up slightly.
is this pretty consistant with yall there?

    • Smart bro i don’t recommend i tried it first thin over 2 years ago they never got our connection stabalized I demanded a refunf of my P1000 deposit and them to remove all their gear, was told I had to go to Tacloban 4 hours away P440 total for 2 people to get my P1000 refund, when i said i paid here in Calbayog i wanted refunded here in Calbayog I was told it was impossible and would not happen, other choices here are pldt DSL i think P1500 start up and about 2-3 Mb speeds, Globe 2 Mb is P995 a month If you get 80% of Globe’s max projection feel lucky.

      • I use Globe and I know that I don’t get all they say I do for the price. If I did, I’d probably upgrade a notch to the P1295 per month.

      • Classic “Only in the Philippines” moment. That reminds me of something that happened to the best man at my wedding. He had bank accounts at two separate banks in Angeles City and decided to close one of them. He was making a deposit at one of the branches for a girl friend’s family and decided to close his account while there. They charged him P500 to close the account at that branch because he had opened the account at a different branch. I think this was Metro Bank.

      • Rick: you’re lucky as heck having that!! as I indicated I have only 2G(EDGE) here and only get about 5KBytes/s
There is a globe tower in the area but it too has only 2G and is down over a hill from me so not much chance of getting
anything. Last year sometime. I put my Smart Bro stick up on about a 25ft pole using a 10meter USB extension cable
outside the house. That improved my setup quite a bit.
I even topped the metal pole with a 2ft. section of bamboo where I actually hung the modem.
That was to prevent any mis-direction due to the metal pole acting as a refector.
But even with all that, My connection is bad and deteriorating with little or no prospects of improving.
Last year around Easter they must have done some maintennance because my signal popped way up. That didnt happen thi
year. dont expect it to either.

    • http://pldt.speedtest.net/ Same site Globe tests their band speeds on , ping times uploads and downloads speeds recorded.

  4. I bought a 5Kw McCulloch generator from my brother to ship to Philippines and guess where it was made.? If you guessed China you are correct. I gave him $300.00 for it. It will handle 30amps on 230V and 2 20amp outlets for 120V. It is only 1 year old. My wife is onto me to get it shipped door to door. So it will be there when we arrive in May. We have been there when tyhoon has come through and been without power for a week and a half. Was there also when half of area we live in went off because transformer tripped off because no air flow and my house was only one to have power, because we are on our on transformer. Samelco showed up about 12 hours later to reset transformer for rest of area. All you needed was a long bamboo stick like they used to reset it. Only in the Philippine.

    • Hey!! man I’m with you on SAMELCO only that’s not usually the name I call it!! By now yall have probably experienced the summer price hike. without adding a thing, mine jumped fro and already hi P5000 to P6000. I’m wondering now if, besides the price of the generator, could it be cost-effective to just run off my own generator. I have one A/C, one ref, a couple fans and my computer. except now I’ve added a 100W FT-847 HF radio to the mix.
I said a month or so ago, I was gonna be on heremore often then got my copmputer scrogged. now I’m back and this is already getting close to a blog hi hi.
I’m in Tarangnan between Calbayog and Catbalogan and where I am there is almost No breeze any time of day.
So I got a question. Am i understanding right? there’s a harbour Freight there in Calbayog? guess I tuned in a little late.

      • Hi Gary C., glad to have you here and commenting. Since you are reading you must know that I am in Texas at this time so I do not know what SAMELCO is doing. I know that we have an a/c, 3 fans, a refrigerator and a freezer and before we left our bill was in the P4000 range. It has been higher (especially the first one), but it also was only about P3500 once before.
What are you talking about “harbour Freight”? I don’t remember anything about that. I’m forgetful though.
I use Globe for my internet service, but I forget how fast I have it set up, I think it’s only 1G, but it’s ‘usually’ good enough. Sometimes it’s a real pain though. I haven’t done any tests recently, but I know it’s pretty slow compared to other places. I believe it was faster than 4KB though.
We’ll be back later this month (I hope) and I will have everything back on track, even better than before. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do and want to make this website better than ever. I hope you hang around to see it.
I enjoy being here in Texas, but I sure will be glad to get back to Calbayog.

      • Hi Gary,

I purchased my things at Harbor Frieght in the US and took them over with me on the plane. No Harbor Frieght in the Phils yet that I know of.

        Mark G.

        • Thanks for clearing that up Mark. I never shop at that place and I was under the impression it was called Freight Harbor, not Harbor Frieght. What do I know though since I’ve never been to one.

          • Hi John,
They mostly have cheapo tools from Asia but it’s the only place I’ve found that you can walk into and buy solar panels off the shelf. i don’t generally buy tools there, lol.
            Mark G.
            http://www.harborfreight.com/#

          • Okay Mark, thanks for the additional information and the link.

      • Gary, you must have seen my old post. I’m not in Calbayog at the moment. I’m back in Mississippi. I doubt whether there is a H.F. there in Calbayog but there are a couple big hardware stores with a large variety of msde.

      • Actually I’m surprised at Samelco II latest monthly bills, the last 2 been under p5000, one under p4000. We run 2 PCs, refrigerator/freezer condo, 2 hp air con in main room at least 1 circulation fan for the rest the house, at night some time 1 hp air con or just a stand fan, my 3 n 1 scanner, printer copier is always on and ready too. Then at least once a month wifey takes 2 days + to run washing machine and dryer plus she loves long hot showers using the instant electric water heater in our CR.

      • This is an update to an old post but what the heck!!
day before yesterday ( Thur Apr 19 2013) samelco shut down a working electrical system about 11:30 AM Heat of the day.
They brought it up for 10 minutes about 4:Pm and then kept it off till 7Pm. Then friday they shut it down again about
11:30 am and kept it off till about 4:15 pm at which time I brought the computer up
and noticed several updates from here in my email. Ironically, I had just gotten home from a trip to Calbayog about an
hour after the power went off at 11:30AM. At 16:35 yesterday, the power went off again untill 18:30PM.
It is now about 10:am Saturday, and the power has already been off once from 0600 to 0730 today and I fully expect it
to go off again around 11am to 12 noon.and my electric bill had just jumped from about P5K to just under P7K this month.
Pretty odd for a company whose web page says they are a “Not For Profit” company. I pay about 3 times as much for
electricity than I’ve paid for it anywhere in Japan, korea, or any place in the Statesd, including Fairbanks Alaska.
Samelco gets it’s power from a Geothermal site on the west side of Leyte
so do not have to import fuel, so no fuel costs like, say, San Antonio Tx.
Yet look at their bill and they have a very long list of charges. I firmly believe they are Tong accounts. There are 2
lines coming into town and distribution appears to be along income areas. One feeds the richer areas and one pretty much
only the poorer areas. I dont need to tell you which one has power more often than the other. Nor do i need to explain
That the nearby town always has power. There has been no announcement of a “rolling Brownout policy here either
but this rural area seems to bear the brunt of all outages.
Well, that’s my gripe for today. I realize I seem like some kind of mal-content. but dang it. some things are just wrong
and nothing happens till somebody hollers. and too often not even then.

        • Gary I don’t suppose moving is an option, so, in my opinion, you are doing the right thing by complaining. Actually it has inspired me to be sure to make a point with Globe that the service I should be getting is just not coming through and needs to be corrected. Of course I have very little choices in internet service (I think only 2), so it’s kind of a risk in biting the hand that feeds me. As you say though Gary, Dang it! It’s just wrong.

        • Resiel and i have a place in the same town as Gary, that are about three blocks apart.Last time we were in Tarangdan and would have brown outs Garys place was without power almost always longer than us and i mean quite abit longer, this makes no sence at all.But as they say dont ask why just remember you are in the philippines. If it were not for the brown outs we would be spending aleast six months a year there.I love the place and the people.

    • lock it down good Generators here been known to sprout legs and run away.

      • Another good reason to use solar panels instead, if you can afford it.

  5. When I lived in Olongapo years ago, the power would go out and I would head to my favorite open air bar about 4 blocks from my apartment. Only way I knew how to stay cool.

    • I could head to the picnic table out front. The relatives from the back do that when they get too hot. There’s not as much air flow as there could be since the Ciriaco is blocking our flow (and view), but it’s better than being in the house or store.

  6. We have a generator at our place in San Joaquin also. I don’t know how many watts though. It is housed at Jen’s parent’s house with the line running from there across some roofs to our house. It works fine as long as people remember to keep it filled with gas. The nearest gas station is the Petron just north of Calbayog. That is about 23km from our house in San Joaquin. I tell Jen’s father that, since he doesn’t work, it is his job to maintain the generator but that seems to be more responsibility than he can handle. Sigh!

Mark, where can we get a solar panel? Did you buy it in Calbayog?

John, it would be interesting to calculate how many hours in a typical week that there is no power. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that it is off at least 10 hours every week.

    • Hi Gary,
I bought the solar panel in the states at Harbor Freight. It was fairly small and I brought it as a carry on. The only other use it gets is the occasional phone charge or the Gameboy, lol. I don’t see the same one any more but it’s similar to this

      http://www.harborfreight.com/interests/solar-power/15-watt-12-volt-solar-panel-96418.html

Our generator is diesel by the way.
      Mark G.

      • Thanks Mark.

      • I seen the panels at Harbor Freight today. What exactly can they be used for? Can you augment your house power with only one panel? They are only 45V and 15V panels and I would think you would need several to make any useful amount of energy. The single panels were about $70 apiece. Also, I did see a gas powered 7000w generator for $599 which I thought was a good price.

        • Hi Randy,
Yes those solar panels are fairly small and it would take quite a few to power a whole house. You could link about a dozen of the 45A models together and have a good start. You would also need to figure in the cost of batteries (12 to 14 at $75 each), a charge controller and a voltage regulator. The cost of bringing everything over from the USA and the possible duties probably exceed any savings you’d see in prices. The same materials can be found in Manila or Cebu at about the same cost. The batteries are available in Calbayog City, same price. Personally I don’t think I can afford that much of an investment when you figure out the total cost. I strictly use one 15A panel to maintain the single 12V battery for the diesel generator and charge some phones, flashlights and the gameboy.
          Mark G.

          • Well Mark, I guess you’re saving something at least!

          • Randy,
On Santo Nino Island we avail of the benefit of LGU supplied electricity between the hours of 6PM and 12 AM. There’s no electricty supplied during the daylight hours. All that for the low cost of about P750 a month. It would be so nice to have the whole house powered by solar.
            Mark G.

          • That 12am … are you talking about noon or midnight because only 6 hours doesn’t seem right, but I guess it could be for only P750.

          • It’s midnight. That’s 6 glorious hours of electricity a day, whether we need it or not.
            Mark G.

          • That sucks Mark. I couldn’t handle that.

          • Being back in the USA I get spoiled easy but it does make you find alternative activities for the daylight hours like going to the beach, taking a ride around the island sightseeing, laying in the hammock, or playing with the kids. Being relative newlyweds we find other creative ways to pass the time, as well. ;-)

          • Soon we will be able to do such things. I’m going to skip the playing with kids part though. Since we are not relatively newlyweds (32 years next month) we usually find ways to pass the time, but not that creative. :(

    • Hi Gary. So where exactly is San Joaquin? Is it past Begaho like heading to Cartarman, or is it along the coast past Tinambacan? I couldn’t find it on the map.

      • San Joaquin is along the coast past Tinambacan. It is about 10km north of Malajog between Baay and Pena if you know where those two barangays are located. It is pretty much 25km from Calbayog.

    • Could be interesting, but who’s to say which week is typical? I could write down the times of the outages for a few weeks and get an average, then we can use that average as being typical. Anyone else want to know something like that?

  7. Randy,
It pays to have a generator. We got a Chinese made one (can’t find anything else there anyway). It’s 6000 watts and we use it to power four houses with minimal needs on Sto. Nino Island. It was P60,000. I asked the lady who sold it to us what the warranty was and she chuckled ‘Warranty? It’s Chinese. There’s no warranty but we’ll fix it for free if you pay for the parts.” How could I resist such honesty? LOL It’s been a little over a year with sparse use but so far so good. We keep the battery topped with a solar panel. You probably wouldn’t need too big a unit if you were in the city and only powering a few items.

    • We had one of the Chinese generators, but Lita said it makes too much noise and I didn’t like the gas smell (it used Premium), so we sold it to Titing for the warehouse.
We hope to get another one in the not so far future. A more powerful one that will actually be able to power my computer also. I wish I knew more about solar panels and I could afford to make the whole house solar powered. I guess that would stop the power spikes.

      • John,
I priced a whole house Solar in 2010. It was around P400,000. A little too much for me I’m afraid.
        Mark G.

      • You can build solar panels fairly inexpensively. Goto YouTube for ton’s of how to videos. The parts are much cheaper than you’d think compared to if you purchase one already made.

        • True. Easy enough in the USA but then you have to get the materials to the Philippines. If you try to have the materials delivered to the province it becomes not so easy. I could only find ‘local’ suppliers in Manila or Cebu. Prices are nearly identical to the USA.

  8. Power outages every day? What about the Cirricao across the street? How widespread is this when it goes out – Calbayog wide? Better bring my portable A/C.

    • Usually it is Calbayog wide, but sometimes it’s only our area. Heck a couple of times it was only 3 houses, including ours. The Ciriaco also goes out, but they have a gigantic generator.
