Samar Govt Focuses on Access Roads to Agricultural Areas, Tourist Sites – PPDO

CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar, Oct 19 (PIA) — Samar Provincial and Development Officer (PPDO) Arthur Cuenco said the provincial government is bent on constructing access roads leading to farms and eco-tourism destinations in Samar.

During the first Samar Local Regional Economic and Development (LRED) Congress held in Calbayog City, today, Cuenco presented the plans of the provincial government to alleviate poverty.

“The provincial government is aware that our people are very poor,” he said as a sort of introduction.

“Our current provincial population is 735,000 and half of them are below poverty line, really a big problem,” he told his audience composed of LGUs that have adopted the LRED process.

He said farmers and fishers are the most poor.

“Despite the 6 percent national growth, growth does not trickle down to the poor,” he lamented presenting the two opposing scenario in the national and local scene.

“The provincial government has made some plans to address widespread poverty.”

Access roads from farm to the business growth centers are needed so that the farmers can deliver their products.

  1. My Grand Father owned forty acres and a mule in Okla. Just kidding he had a tractor to. But he could not support his family just by farming. He worked in the coal mines most of his life and farmed when he had time. I remember he would grow corn and other stuff. I think the Gov started paying him to leave his land idle so market would not get flooded with what he was growing. Now days I do not thank a family can live off the land especially if you have a big family. The only ones making a profit is big corparation who owns land as far as the eye can see. My wife was going to buy a rice farm from one of her friends, because she needed money for medical bills. But by the time we added in the labor after they found Kano was buying, fertilizer, seads, and how much per harvest, we figured it was cheaper just to go to town and buy it from the store.

    • Yeah George I’ve heard of that “paying not to grow” thing. I don’t believe that the Philippines is to the point that they can not make a living off farming yet and I hope it’s not in my lifetime.
