SAMAR - Once you visit, you'll want SAMORE

Monday – 13 Jun

Monday – 13 Jun

[smartads] The Mr. Bean cartoon is a favorite around here.  The children just love to watch him make a fool of himself.  I think he’s too goofy to watch, but as long as the children are happy, I’m happy.

Useless Knowledge: Deep Hunger: It might point to an unusual eating disorder called tomatophagia. People with tomatophagia develop unusual cravings for such things as tomatoes, ice, detergent, starch, clay, and even dirt.  (well I like tomatoes and ice, but I think I’ll pass on the rest of those)

12 Jun – Today I’m going to dedicate the pictures to silly, crazy, unusual and stupid pictures.  I don’t have any links going to them, but I hope you enjoy them nonetheless.  Some of the pictures, 3 or 4 of them, I have used in the posts before, but I think they are worth repeating, in case someone missed out.

Filipinos Only at Pearly Gates

It’s raining again.  This will be at least 3 days in a row now.  I haven’t been keeping up with it this time, but I will do that until we get a day with no rain.  I wonder if we’ll break the 19 days in a row with rain record?

Everyone Loves a Filipino Girl

I know I do.

Cathy is outside grilling some fish.  I think I’ll go outside and bug her.  I like to bug her about cooking ‘dead’ fish.  I discovered that when the cook the fish here, they don’t clean it first.  I mean they don’t gut it, they just grill the whole thing and eat it all.  I guess I already knew that, but just never really thought about it.  That just makes me like the fish even less than I already did.

Parking for Filipinos Only

I’ve actually seen this sign in the US in a couple of different people’s garage.

While I was outside bugging Cathy, Lita showed up.  After church was over, she and Crystal went downtown to buy a few groceries.  She couldn’t get much today, but she got the essentials to keep the BBQ going and food for my supper.  She told me she was going to make some of that fried chicken that she only uses a couple tablespoons of oil to fry a whole chicken.  Well all the pieces of the chicken, not the whole thing at once.  That way you get the flavor of fried chicken without all the fat.  I believe I’ve heard that referred to as Swiss Fried Chicken.

Friend's Eggs

I wouldn’t bring any friends with eggs to this place.

Instead of the fried chicken she decided to have grilled chicken.  I didn’t care really, I like both.  I’m not sure why she changed her mind, but J is the one that actually grilled the chicken.  She mixed what she wanted to brush on the chicken and let him do the cooking.  It was good, but I like it better when we actually have BBQ sauce to brush on the chicken while cooking and/or after it is cooked on the plate.  When we were eating the chicken (with rice) we used some of the hot and spicy ketchup.  It actually tasted pretty good.  I didn’t think it would.  BBQ sauce is one of the items I plan to get in Tacloban next month.  Hopefully they will have the Kraft Original, that’s my favorite one.

Filipino Clock

This would make a good Filipino clock, maybe they would be more on time this way.

Filipino Time

This one is actually more accurate.  Filipinos are mostly laid back, so no hands are necessary.  They’ll get to it.

Useless Knowledge: The shallow champagne glass originated with Marie Antoinette, from wax molds made of her breasts.  (that will make drinking from them more enjoyable now)

Today we reached 100 pages of comments on this blog.  There really should be more though because sometimes there are several days in a row without even one comment. Maybe things will pick up soon in the comment department.

Pek-Pek Cafe

Pek Pek in Tagalog is vagina.  I’m not sure why they would name their little restaurant that.

I saw that someone from Austin Texas was looking for a Chow King in Texas.  I’ll bet they didn’t find one.  Although there may be one in Texas in the near future, probably around Houston or Dallas, the only Chow Kings in the USA right now are in California to the best of my knowledge.  I understand that there are 6 of them in California.  To find Chow King locations, including in the USA, you can go to this site: or this site for the Philippines only: .

McDonald's not #1 in PI

Jollibee punching out Ronald McDonald

Jollibee wrestling Ronald McDonald

I’m not even sure this one is in the Philippines, but this lady has the right idea to get business

Today I signed up with the Samar Paradise Facebook.  I’m hoping to get pictures and stories from there to share with y’all.  I would of course give them the credit for anything I get on there, I just want to spread the information around.

Biema Shoe Shop

A spiritual shoe repair shop?

I was trying to add a forum to the blog, but I’m not really sure about how to go about that.  I tried for awhile, but it was giving me problems and a headache, so I just gave up for now.  I could get it to show up, but there didn’t seem to be a way to add content.  I’ll figure it out some other time.  I think that anything the forum can accomplish, we can accomplish through the comment section.  This was actually my second attempt to get a forum on this blog and I did get closer this time than last time.  Maybe next time I’ll have enough know how to actually get it done.  In the meantime, just use the comment section for any questions and concerns.

There can be only one - Jollibee or McDonalds

Emie and J went downtown to get Ramil.  Supposedly he went to a club downtown.  They left to get him about 4 hours ago and none of them are back yet.  It’s a couple of minutes until midnight right now.  I told Lita that she should have sent me to get him, we’d at least be on the way back by now.  For some reason she didn’t think that was a good idea.

Made in the Philippines

Lita and I just finished watching The Sorcerer’s Apprentice with Nicolas Cage.  We liked the movie.  We were both hoping to see Avatar for the first time today, but we missed it.  Both those movies are part of the new Star Movies that start every Sunday.  They will play for 2 or 3 months.  There is a continuous set of new movies starting every month on Star Movies.  There is no TV schedule that I know of, except they advertise on TV, upcoming movies of the day.  If you are not on the right channel at the right time, you have no clue what comes on during the day.  Even if you are on the right channel at the right time, you only get like the next 2 shows coming on at best.

Merry Christmas - Filipino Style

Not a very exciting day today and tomorrow looks about as interesting so far.  I’m going to add in the pictures and Philippine History and call it a blog.  It’s a blog.

P1 to Pee - P2 to Poop

Those are pronounced  E He and Tah E

A lot people here just E Hi on the side of the road or in the bushes.

Public Urinal

I don’t think I’d use this one.  I’ll hold it instead.

Salamat, Palaam

Useless Knowledge: A Dolly Parton is a putt on an especially hilly green. It’s also known as a roller coaster.  (I wonder why they named it that?)

Today in Philippine History

12 June

1898 – Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy, leader of the second phase of the Philippine Revolution against Spain, proclaims the Independence of the Philippines “under the protection of the Powerful and Humanitarian Nation,” that is the United States of America and thereby ceasing “to have any allegiance to the Crown of Spain” and unfurling a blue, red and yellow flag partly inspired by the Stars-and Stripes banner of the imperialist United States; ironically, within eight months, the Bald Eagle nation will show the pathetically deceived Aguinaldo its true color as it invades the fledgling Southeast Asian republic by instigating the hostilities with the Filipino troops under a vile pre-arranged plan on February 4, 1899, of which the resulting savage Filipino-American War (1899-1914) will last for a bloody ten years or so.
